What is a clutch?

Your clutch is the connection between your engine and gearbox and allows you to create motion and change gear to stay in control of your engine’s power. It’s therefore essential that your clutch is working correctly and that wear is monitored. When you have problems with your clutch, there are many possible causes. Sometimes a simple repair is sufficient to solve the problem but in the long run, clutch replacement is often the most economical choice.

How do I know when I need my clutch replacing?

If you’ve noticed any of the signs below, you may need a clutch replacement:

• If the clutch pedal feels spongy, vibrates or sticks when you press it
• If you hear a squeaking or grumbling noise when you press the pedal
• The car has difficulty accelerating
• If it’s difficult to change gear
• If it feels like the clutch slips so you lose acceleration for a moment

How can I make my clutch last longer?

What you can do to increase the durability of your clutch:

• Don’t rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving, you will wear out the bearings.
• Don’t leave the car in gear with your foot on the clutch at traffic lights or when doing a hill-start for the same reason.
• Release the handbrake gradually with your thumb on the release button as you lift the clutch and press the accelerator.
